economic core of the continent
It is very important for the understanding of mega-cities as socio-economic and urban development category is the fact that the Megalopolis not "overgrown" urban agglomeration or the next higher "mark" areas and the density of settlement, but a completely new phenomenon, which is characterized by its specific qualities. Megalopolis, usually characterized by the main axis of communication and so-called nuclei (urban centers) formed along it and serving as the national and often international importance. So, the main function of the American mega-cities defined as "economic core of the continent"
. This is true for mega encountered along these axes, as Boston - New York - Washington, Tokyo - Osaka, London - Liverpool and others
The principal axis, combining as it were "superimposed" on each other's network of functional subsystems domestic, national and international character, is, apparently, the main qualitative feature of mega-cities. Another important characteristic - high population density (an average of 250 persons per 1 km2) and the cities of various sizes. A dense network of large, medium and small cities like "catalyzes" the process of establishing functional relationships between the diverse parts of the mega-cities and contributes to increasing branching of the interaction between different in magnitude and profile of urban centers.
These relationships are materialized, especially in technical infrastructure, including highways, railways, waterways, communications, pipelines, water and sewage systems, telephone lines, the flow of transport, movement of people and goods. At the same time to develop and enhance communication of "hidden" nature of public interest, competition, information exchange, etc.
